Falkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: 1948 (Oct. 2) air letter (army form W.3077) sent to Essex franked 3d. pair by the Electrical & Telegraphs Dept. in Stanley with transcribed message dated the previous day received by telegram from Stephen McNeile at Base D who reports to his sister that he was ''enjoying sledging'', one fold partly split. A rare item, this the earliest known transcribed radio message sent from Stanley on behalf of a member of the F.I.D.S. by a number of years. Staff Sgt. Stephen McNeile, F.I.D.S. surveyor, was absent from the Base at the time of the catastrophic fire shortly afterward on November 8, returning to find that two of the three occupants had been killed, the hut and provisions destroyed. Falkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: 1953 (Mar. 22) F.I.D.S., Grahamland stationery letter (adhesive tape stain at top) written and signed by Arthur H. Farrant. ''Postmaster Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetlands'' with interesting comments on the cold and the forthcoming Coronation. Also six covers to the same addressee in London franked at 21/2d. rate variously cancelled 1955-56 at Anvers Island, Marguerite Bay etc. Shortly before writing this letter Farrant had undergone a life threatening misadventure in a small boat and four days after its writing sent a telegram to the F.I.D.S. Secretary in Stanley requesting acceptance of his resignation, stating that he was ''unable to get co-operation from other members'' on the Base. His resignation was refused and on Nov. 17 Farrant shot himself in the head on Deception Island, a verdict of suicide while of unsound mind subsequently recorded.
