Antarctica: Scottish National Expedition 1902-04: Local letter handwritten and signed by expedition leader William Speirs Bruce on three sheets of toilet paper (unused), headed ''Bay N/Camp'' and addressed to ''Al. Ross Esq./S.Y. Scotia'' (taxidermist Alastair Ross), carried by zoologist David Wilton with manuscript receiving note ''21/11/03''. Message relates to the collecting of samples and accompanied ''8 Nellies Eggs unblown'' as well as ''a skin of white nellie. I ripped the body out as well as I could with rough tools, a little blood has got on around the cut which I hope you can get off''. A unique 'internal' expedition message providing physical evidence of the movements of the expedition party during their exploration of the northern coast of Laurie Island. The Giant Petrel, 'nellie' or 'stinkbird', was noted by James Weddell in 1823 as ''having an unpleasing appearance, and being extremely voracious. Their fondness for blubber often induces them to eat so much that they are unable to fly.'' Photo.

Antarctica: Scottish National Antarctic Expedition 1902-04: 1904, two picture postcards of Buenos Aires sent by expedition zoologist David W. Wilton to Jessie, the sister of expedition taxidermist Alastair Ross, a nurse at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. One card dated ''19.1.04'' with interesting message regarding Ross's health ''I've taken great care of your brother. His weight is 200lbs when I left him, so living in the S. Orkneys seems to agree with him.'' (Ross had remained on Laurie Island when the ''Scotia'' left on Nov. 27 1903 for refitting and had indeed gained weight during his stay due to the high protein diet of seagulls and their eggs). Also unused cards of Buenos Aires (2, one annotated ''Customs House''), Fayal (Azores) and Wynberg (South Africa) acquired by Wilton or Ross during the expedition). Photo. During the four week stay of the ''Scotia'' in Buenos Aires for repairs and reprovisioning preparatory to the second voyage, expedition leader William Speirs Bruce entered negotiations with the Argentine government regarding the future of the weather station. On Jan. 20 an agreement was confirmed whereby three scientific assistants from the Argentine government would travel back to Laurie Island to work for a year, under Robert Mossman, as the first stage of an annual arrangement, Omond House, its furnishings and provisions, and all magnetic and meteorological instruments, being ceded to the Argentine government. The Base Antártica Orcadas has remained operational ever since.
