(7) cancelled by eight strikes of the extremely rare killer cancellation of thin bars in star shape, backstamped 'ALIWAL NORTH/B/SP 5/84'', Cape Town Sept. 16, London Oct. 6 and Jerusalem Oct. 25 arrival, horizontal crease at foot and stained (recipient's ms. note on flap indicates that the cover arrived ''dans cette condition''). Very rare, this cancellation, most probably a provisional forerunner of the barred numeral, was first recorded by Collins in 1955 on a single other cover. Endorsed ''Voie d'Angleterre'', franked with Napoléon 80c. imperf. pair at double letter rate, cancelled ''4077'' lozenges, Apr. 28 despatch c.d.s., red boxed ''P.P.'' and London Paid Apr. 29 transit, backstamped Paris à Calis and red Cape Town June 6. Francois Daumas, a missionary from the Paris Evangelical Mission Society began his work in Basutoland in 1835, establishing his mission station near the border with Ficksburg in the Orange Free State in 1836. The station was destroyed in 1865 during the conflict between O.F.S. forces and King Moshweshwe, obliging Daumas to withdraw to Pietermaritzburg.
