Very rare, this cancellation, most probably a provisional forerunner of the barred numeral, was first recorded by Collins in 1955 on a single other cover. Francois Daumas, a missionary from the Paris Evangelical Mission Society began his work in Basutoland in 1835, establishing his mission station near the border with Ficksburg in the Orange Free State in 1836. The station was destroyed in 1865 during the conflict between O.F.S. forces and King Moshweshwe, obliging Daumas to withdraw to Pietermaritzburg.
