On Aug. 20 an earthslip crashed onto the Palmerston North to Napier freight train just outside the Manawatu Gorge. The locomotive and first three wagons, including a mail van, fell into the flooded river, killing the driver and fireman. Mail was salvaged some days later and taken to Wellington for drying and onward transmission, only around a dozen covers having been subsequently recorded. Photo.

This proof was printed from the original plate made by the Royal Mint in the U.K. before the discovery that the plate was spaced too closely vertically and that the trial sheets could not be perforated satisfactorily.
