Guernsey: 1844 (Sept.) stampless entire letter apparently written by a nutter with appropriately mad message inside, sent from Guernsey to Somerset with ''2'' charge mark (S.G. type 11a, only recorded in this year), the reverse sealed by Punch's Anti-Graham label tied by the arrival datestamp. These seals were issued by Punch magazine after the Home Secretary, Sir James Graham, had authorised examination of letters to certain individuals in the postal system. A Government inquiry was forced by the outcry and the practice was ceased (or so they say). This item is believed to be a unique usage of this wafer seal in the Channel Islands. Photo.
