It refers to previous letters from the Lord Marshall, the Earl of Arundle, who was also Lord Lieutenant of the county of Norfolk and the city of Norwich. There is no indication of place given in the letter although it was clearly sent from an East Anglian location, probably Saxham. This is inferred from an interesting postscript reading ''Sr I will send your letter in to Suffolk as sown as I can but the plag (plague) is so much att bery that the carears are not sufferd to goe''. Various papers were originally enclosed which refer to problems of transferring money to London. The letter is sealed with the intaglio seal of the Privy Council and would have been carried free to Thetford. The letter has a ''OC/13'' Bishopmark and a charge of 2 pence was raised. 1351 | Sale number: 101 Postal History and Covers: Norfolk: 1665 (Jan. 25th) letter signed inside ''Charles R'', addressed to Lord Townshend, Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, or his deputy Lieutenants ordering the raising of the militia in Norfolk to guard the ports of the county. The letter sent from Oxford, where the Court had moved due to the outbreak of plaque in London, and endorsed ''Haste Extraordinary Post hast for his Ma'ties most speciall service.'' It was further endorsed to be ''delivered to the Deputy Lieutenant nearest to the first stage in the County of Norfolk and by him to be forthwith communicated to the rest of them''. The letter is endorsed internally by the Deputy Lieutenants with the time of receipt and despatch, the route taken by the letter being via Houghton, Hunstanton, Stow Bardolph, Quidenham, Melton Constable, Shottesham and finally Gissing the seat of Robert Kemp. Charles II had reluctantly declared war on the Dutch in March 1665 and equally reluctantly the French were drawn in to the conflict. The letter refers to the raising of the militia ''both Horse & Foot'' and that they ''do take Speciall care & give speedy order to have the Beacons of our sd County well repaired & constantly watched''.
