The Carlisle Handstruck ''4'' mark has been lightly crossed through on arrival in London, where the letter was endorsed as 'Official' by 'G. Lills, Paym[aster]. Gen[era]l. Whitehall' and a red crowned circle London ''FREE/6 JA 6/1840'' c.d.s. applied (last week of the Free system) on the front. An important Item, we do not recall having seen any other examples of English Handstruck Four markings on Free Mail.
