The Jerry Santangelo Interrupted Mail: Ship Wrecks: 1844 (June 22nd) Barque ''Isabella'' sailed from Melbourne bound for London, during a storm in the Bass Strait, the Isabella was totally wrecked and the passengers and crew managed to get to Flinders Island. Some boxes were washed ashore over the next few weeks, one which contained a small amount of mail. Entire posted in Melbourne on June 11th. and reached London on 13th. February 1845. It was redirected to Malta. Extremely rare as stated only three items known. Photo.

She was retained as a prison ship and arrived at Norfolk, Virginia in the charge of a German prize crew in February. The mail was released, with manuscript endorsement ''January 1916, Captured by the German Gun Boat, and run into America by German Sailors but afterwards handed over to British Government by the American Government''. This was due to there being no overland or river route at the time. New Orleans was under blockade by the British Navy, preparatory to the attack which occurred in early 1815. Mail was slipped through the blockade and the dangerous waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. The letter tells of British ships patrolling the coast to maintain the blockade among other military details. This is stated to be the only cover reported from this blockade. Photo.
