[Pos.1], with Shoal Harbour July 27, ''12. 8. 33 LIDO DI ROMA'' and ''14. 8. 33 ROMA'' datestamps on reverse, vertical cover crease not affecting adhesive. Bad weather delayed General Balbo's take off until Aug. 8. The day after 24 planes took off from the Azores but one crashed killing the pilot. The remaining 23 planes flew on from Lisbon, arriving at Ostia, near Rome on Aug. 12. Approx. 1,150 items of mail were loaded at Shoal Harbour, most cancelled St. John's July 26. Each flown cover was identified with a specific 'pouch number' linked to a specific flight stage, Newfoundland to Rome being 1000+. The circular ''Air Cruise/North America (''Crociera Aere'') cachet was struck in either green or blue. Photo.

Canada: Newfoundland: Airmails: 1919 Cleary bogus overprints on Caribou 2c., 3c. and 24c., overprinted with the fraudulent five line ''1st Atlantic/Air Post/Martinsyde,/Raynham,/Morgan.'' similar to the issued G.P.O. overprint, the 2c. unused with small mark on reverse, the other two mint, rare. Edwin Cleary was a reporter on the Daily Express and applied this fake overprint to Newfoundland stamps and stationery. These overprints were never sanctioned by the Newfoundland Postal Department. Canada: Newfoundland: Airmails: 1930 forged ''Columbia'' overprint on Caribou 36c., diagonally bisected and rejoined, 'unused'. This forged overprint was one of many brought before the Courts in 1933-34 during the trial of Percy Fearn who was found guilty of fraud offences including faked de Pinedo and Balbo overprints. The bisection of certain forged potentially valuable stamps was carried out to prevent them from being later fraudulently sold as genuine. Photo.

Canada: Newfoundland: Airmails: 1932 spurious DO-X cover bearing unsurcharged $1 with genuine St. John's June 2 receiving c.d.s. on reverse. Covers with unsurcharged frankings were flown but these are very scarce. Normally the St. John's receiving datestamp was only applied to mail being returned to Newfoundland by diplomatic pouch and there is no obvious indication that this cover was eligible for that privilege. It is also noted that the St. John's May 20 machine cancellation includes a postal slogan not known on any other DO-X mail. As the cover addressed to someone at the G.P.O. in St. John's It is suspected that Post Office staff was/were involved. Nevertheless, an interesting item. Photo.
