106 | Sale number: 27 Postal History and Covers: 1841 (March 4th) entire letter addressed to 'John Cameron, Postmaster, Bonaw', the address panel showing two strikes of the black Maltese Cross, one red handstruck ''1'' and three black handstruck ''2'' (all of the same type), the reverse showing another strike of the black ''2''. This is the finest of the covers from this correspondence and the only one recorded to show this combination of three markings. In the absence of any logical reason for the postmaster to apply postal markings to mail addressed to himself, it seems probable that he was using such mail to clean or test the handstamp impressions. The postmaster seems to have been a somewhat colourful character, as the records show that he was sent to Inverary gaol in October 1846 for unspecified offences. Photo Price Realised UNSOLD |

The adhesives with small faults but mainly good margins and an attractive and almost certainly unique use. Photo. It is thought that this is the only extant cover bearing the 1841 1d. used from Prussia, and also the earliest use of any adhesive postage stamps from Prussia.Note: The envelope has manuscript '6 SG' in red, so presumably the letter was handed into the Prussian Post Office with stamps attached and part of the postage prepaid in cash. There were three routes available, mail could go via Hamburg, via Belgium to Ostende, or by the Tour and Taxis post via France to Calais. At this time the rates were complex, the equivalent rate in the other direction from Great Britain to Prussia via the French route for 1/4oz letter was 10d., and for a 1/2oz letter 1s.3d. The envelope with contents weigh approximately 10 grams (more than 1/4oz but less than 1/2oz). Six silbergroschen was equivalent to approximately 7.2 pence sterling. Price Realised £3600 |

Photo.Note: On April 26th 1881, while on passge to the Pacific Station for her maiden commission, H.M.S. Doterel was destroyed by an explosion while at anchor of Sandy Point, Straits of Magellan with the loss of 143 lives. The second envelope must have been posted only a few days before the explosion. From the Times of London is the account sent to the Secretary of the Admiralty by Commander Evans of Her Majesty's late ship Doterel, writing from the Brittania which carried survivors to London. The Commander describes two explosions. The first was in the starboard gangway and the second, much larger, from charges and other explosives carried in the fore-magazine. Interesting is the fact that the shell-room and gun-cotton magazines, all stored aft of the mainmast, did NOT explode. Doterel's boilers were continuing to run hot for condensation purposes (for drinking water). The Times printed two letter extracts a few days later, sent by the Clerical Secretary of the South American Missionary Society's London office. From Captain J.C.T. Willis, master of the society's mission yawl, the Allen Gardiner: 'I was towed throujgh the first narrows by Her Majesty's ship Doterel and anchored at dark on the 22d. Since then this vessel foundered by explosion within 200 yards of the Allen Gardiner. ... she anchored near us, intending to coal by lighter.' Cpt. Willis goes on to describe the scene, the damage done to his and other ships, and how he immediately set out with crew to rescue any survivors. Price Realised £150 |
