Tonga: Maritime Mail: 1897, fine double framed ''PACKET BOAT.'' mark tying 1897 1s. to long O.H.T.M.S. envelope to Berne, Switzerland, addressed, signed and dated May 14 1897 by Chief Postmaster William Campbell, with Auckland Oct. 16, Colombo Nov. 1 and Bern Nov. 27 arrival backstamps. It is believed that the supply of the 1897 Pictorial issue arrived on the same vessel as departed with these covers (see also previous lot) and that the 1s. was affixed, but left uncancelled, by Campbell as this was eighteen days before the intended date of issue.
