A completed die proof of the monocolour design, in black with partly cleared irregular black surround, on glazed card (92 x 60mm), dated ''30 AUG 09'' in blue and stamped ''BEFORE/HARDENING'', very fine. Ex J.T. Clarke. S.G. Spec. M25. Photo. This proof is particularly interesting in that it reveals De La Rue's method of construction for the new plate. In the design for the unified die eventually printed in shades of orange the white space between the previous two parts of the design had been thinned now that considerations of registrations of the two colours no longer applied. The fringe around the top and right hand side made it possible to construct most of the plate from leads struck from this die. The left and bottom fringes of the upper and lower half sheets may well have been made from separate fringe leads.
