Malta: Postal History: 1841 (May 27th) Spooner caricature number 10, used from Malta to London, rated ''1/-'' and endorsed ''Per Oriental'', which picked up the mails at Malta on her return voyage from Alexandria to London, she landed the mails at Falmouth on June 6th and continued to Portsmouth where the passengers and freight were ''ordered to perform quarantine'' as the Plague was still at Alexandria. Malta and London circular datestamps on reverse, some soiling, otherwise fine. A rarity, believed to be the only Mulready caricature used from overseas to the United Kingdom. Photo.

Malta: Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars: 1798 (June 12th) entire letter headed ''On board the Guillaume Tell'' during the attack on Malta prior to the defeat, addressed to France, rated ''40'' and straight line ''CADIZ'' in red. Very interesting letter giving details of sailing and arrival in Malta ''where we have been for three days, this island has refused to surrender straight away, we disembarked seven thousand grenadiers and chasseurs who captured the whole of the island except the town which is heavily fortified, this troop is now under the town batteries which have been firing continually all day long, as has the squadron''. Malta: Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars: 1798 (June 14th) entire letter from a French Knight of St. John to his brother at Cordoba, Spain and redirected to Lucern, bearing handstruck ''10'' and on reverse a circular framed ''CORDO/VA'' both in red. Fascinating contents include ''On Sunday the 10th after the arrival of three squadrons....carrying more than 40,000 troops and composed of 400 sail....our Republicans having General Bonaparte at their head, made during the morning two or three landings that could not be prevented because we had not sufficient forces to enable us to oppose them. After 24 hours of defence the people abandoned us; some Knights have been cruelly killed by those they commanded, others ill-treated and seriously wounded, so that we have been obliged to surrender, rather than be put to the sword. Malta: Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars: 1798 (June 24th) entire letter from Antoine Chariez with Napoleon's Army in garrison at Valetta, addressed to his family in France, rate ''14'' and showing the unique ''loaf of bread'' ''MALTE'' handstamp. Interesting letter regarding the very severe heat and writes ''We captured the Island of Malta with a loss of not even 30 men, which is a victory for us as it is an impregnable fortress. They surrendered as they did not have enough troops to guard the fortress. The Island of Malta is not large, as it only has a circumference of 20 leagues'' and goes on ''As soon as Malta was captured the squadron left for Sicily, where they found the English has landed''. Stewart a few day before the loss of the Queen Charlotte'' (A few weeks later the ship was blown up at Leghorn). Interesting letter ''Malta is entirely in our possession except the strong town of La Valette which is closely blockaded by sea and land, the works are amazingly strong perhaps the strongest in the world, but then it would be necessary to have upwards of fifteen thousand men to defend them and the French have not a third of that number and those half starved, they live solely on bread and water with a few vegetables which they raise in ditches and ramparts, they have not has a mouthful of brandy or wine for four months.''. Letter states ''I recommend a careful look off Cape St. Vincent and Cadiz for the approach of the Enemy; and also the Frigates should be stationed off Cape Finisterre fro the same purpose. Keep one of the Line of Battle Ships off Cadiz, directing her nevertheless to come in so frequently as to be always kept in readiness to join me at Mahon on your receiving intelligence of the Enemy's approach. There appears to be a Ship of the Line and a Frigate off Cape Palos. It may be easily ascertained; and if you find it is so, try to seize them''. Photo.
