Fascinating contents include ''On Sunday the 10th after the arrival of three squadrons....carrying more than 40,000 troops and composed of 400 sail....our Republicans having General Bonaparte at their head, made during the morning two or three landings that could not be prevented because we had not sufficient forces to enable us to oppose them. After 24 hours of defence the people abandoned us; some Knights have been cruelly killed by those they commanded, others ill-treated and seriously wounded, so that we have been obliged to surrender, rather than be put to the sword.
